Mechanics of the integration lines in the Enneagram
I propose that integration is a result of fulfilling a type’s core motivation, and disintegration is to lose the sense of fulfilment one’s core is built upon. I’ll share examples of how this looks for all lines after detailing the general mechanics.
What a type seeks to do is what its ascending type takes for granted and see as baseline. Each type is living the consequence of what its integration type tries to avoid, and fundamentally and automatically deals with these challenges, as they are preconditions to the type ahead. We can say that a type specialises in the groundwork of its integration type. The integration type inherits this as an automatic expectation of feasibility.
Integration is a natural progression of meeting the core motivation and disintegration the result of letting it go, temporarily, to instead shift focus to its prerequisite. Losing hope of our core calls into question the very premise our seeking stands upon, which now has to be proven to ourselves.
It is important to note that having no hope means no longer trying, no longer being oriented, motivated or energised towards it. We have already been taken beyond our tolerance regarding our integration point, and attempting to act despite this futility is pointless.
Every drive a person can have implies something is possible and something else is lacking, but it is only changes relative to the core need that cause a shift in movement along the lines. This means that unless the fundamental motivation has been met or given up on, the specific ways we try to meet them can fail or succeed without integration or disintegration taking place. We exhaust and give up on all the concrete strategies we can think of before losing hope of the fundamental motivation.
This is not merely meant to be seen as a guideline. I claim that everything that inherently belongs to a type can be written as a function of having moved on from its preceding point and given up its succeeding one. Although I do not tie both ends for all examples, this should always be assumed.
Moving on the lines of integration is not only binary, but a matter of degree. We are continually in the process of either integrating or disintegrating, but reset to our type baseline which we are sensitised to and which has more gravity to us. In zooming in on part of a process, we center there and forget the whole picture, forgetting scope. We don’t remember where we came from and where we are going. We forget the origin and purpose of our differentiation, or that we will move on after it’s done. And we forget that our type is ultimately a step of the way and in service of the flow of the whole. Connecting to the disintegration line as its continuation and to the integration line as our own continuation will realign our individual directives with higher energies and harmonise the individual with the whole.
Through this principle everyone can write their enneagram of integration and disintegration; the examples should be endless.
A deeper definition will follow after sharing other ideas.
