Book Review – In the Tall Trees by Angel Van Atta

I have had this book on my Kindle for a minute, and now I am disappointed I waited so long to dive in. Told from the eyes of a child, In the Tall Trees takes a moment to adjust to given the use of childish language, but as soon as you get a grasp of it, you find yourself pulled along on a truly horrific journey.
Mella, the narrator, her mother, and her brother Petey are being held captive by “The Bad Man, who delivers unspeakable horrors on a regular basis. The worst part of it all is that while they are not explicitly explained, the way in which Mella describes what she is hearing is more impactful.
This is a fast paced read that is a walking trigger warning for a variety of reasons, and it all feels oh so very real. I would exercise caution if SA and child harm make you squeamish, but if you can handle it, I would suggest you take a trip In the Tall Trees.
