The Official Blog of Horror Author John Watson

Two New Book Reviews

I received this title from Night Worms and have to confess that it took me a long time to get through, even though I did a little bit of speed reading for the final few chapters. I had a tough time from this one right from the start, mostly because the characters were, for the most part totally unlikeable, save for the youngest child. There are some good moments of family drama and creepy horror, but just not enough to keep me engaged throughout.

Let me start with the positives of this book, as Tremblay is an author whose work I legitimately like. The characters were very well put together and the pacing was, for the most part, very good. There were also some really good set pieces, particularly in the hospital.

One the negative side, there were times when the story felt a little repetitive, plus I think that while we are still a few years removed from COVID, I am still a little jaded by the whole thing. That made a story about a virus less than appealing, which I am sure tainted my view somewhat.

If you have enjoyed the author's previous work, you are still likely to get a kick out of this one.
