How to Install and Run UO Outlands on Linux —Updated September 24th 2025

Here are the steps necessary to play UO Outlands on Linux. For the past several years, Outlands performed well on both Bottles and Lutris. Lately, I have found difficulty in getting the game to run in Bottles while Lutris still works. I have also found a few other methods by which you can play Outlands: Running the game through Faugus Launcher, through Steam added as a non-Steam game or through Wine itself. Instructions for each method are below:

How to install on Faugus Launcher

  1. Download and install Faugus Launcher
  2. Press the Gear icon in the lower left hand corner for the Settings page. Within the Settings page, select the Proton Manager and download one of the following runners: GE-Proton-10.16, GE-Proton-9.27 or Proton-EM-10.0-2E. Once that is downloaded, close that window.
  3. Back in your Settings page, press the Winecfg button. With Winecfg, go to the Libraries tab. In the New overrides for Library box, type tabtip.exe and hit Add. This adds tabtip.exe to the existing overrides. Find tabtip.exe in the existing overrides list. Select it and hit Edit and make it disabled. Once that is done, you can leave Winecfg.
  4. Download the UO Outlands Client if you not have done so already.
  5. Press the Plus icon in the bottom left hand corner of Faugus Launcher to create a new game launcher. Name the game whatever you wish. Press the Magnifying Glass and select the Outlands.exe file. Set the Proton version to one of the following: GE-Proton-10.16, GE-Proton-9.27 or Proton-EM-10.0-2E. Hit Ok once you are done, then press the Play button in the bottom right hand corner of Faugus Launcher to run the Outlands.exe file.
  6. Follow the install instructions on the Launcher.
  7. After the game is installed, close out of Outlands and go back into Faugus Launcher. Right-click on Outlands in the game list, go to the Path area and press the Magnifying Glass to navigate to the game launcher file in your newly-installed game files:

/home/username/Faugus/uo-outlands/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ultima Online Outlands

Select Outlands.exe in that folder.

How to install on Lutris

You will need to do a manual install of the Outlands installer. You will also need to install ProtonPlus from Flatpak.

  1. Install Lutris (App Repository or Flatpak) and ProtonPlus onto your system.
  2. Open Lutris and let it update itself. Once that is done, close Lutris.
  3. With Lutris closed, open ProtonPlus. Select Lutris from the side menu and under Proton-GE, find GE-Proton10-16 and download it. Once that is completed, you can close ProtonPlus.
  4. Reopen Lutris and press the “+” in the top left corner of the window and select “Add locally installed game” from the choices. From there, you need the following:
    1. In the Game Info tab, name the game whatever you like (Outlands); In the Runner drop down menu, select Wine.
    2. In the Game options tab, select the Outlands.exe installer for Executables.
    3. In the Runner options tab, for the Wine version, select GE-Proton10-16 that you downloaded using ProtonPlus. Everything else you can leave on.
    4. Hit Save to close out of the manual install area.
  5. Select the Outlands install you just setup in the main Lutris window and hit Play. It might take a moment or so for the Launcher window to come up so be patient. Follow the install instructions on the Launcher.
  6. To make a shortcut to the Outlands launcher (Outlands.exe), move the following path to find your Outlands files:

~/user/Games/whateveryounamedthegameas/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ultima Online Outlands

How to install on Wine

This is a much easier install using Wine directly. Special thanks to Outlands developer jfm0445 for posting their instructions to a fellow Linux user. I’m basically just adding the instructions here.

  1. Install Wine-Staging on your system. If you have never done this before, go to https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/wikis/Download and follow the instructions.
  2. Download the UO Outlands Client if you not have done so already.
  3. In your terminal, navigate to where you downloaded the Outlands.exe file (cd Downloads).
  4. Type wine Outlands.exe and let the program run. You’ll more than likely have to follow a prompt to install Mono. The Launcher should be visible after that. Install the game like normal.
  5. To navigate to the Outlands.exe that you just installed, move to the following folder:

/home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ultima Online Outlands
6. To run the game, type wine Outlands.exe

How to Install Outlands on Steam:

These instructions come from Discord user mustang1x1 in the Outlands Discord channel. Their instructions were for setting the game up on the Steam Deck but it works very much the same way on a Linux Desktop.

  1. Install ProtonPlus or Proton-Up Qt (Discover Store
  2. Install the newest GE-Proton version using that tool for Steam – the recommended one should be okay
  3. Restart Steam client
  4. Download Outlands.exe launcher from the official website
  5. Open Steam client, Add a non-Steam game to your Library, select Outlands.exe launcher
  6. Go to compatibility settings and select the GE-Proton version which you have installed
  7. Open the game and install it like usual using default settings. Don't change path for the installation.

You can execute the game from either desktop or in-game mode directly. If you want to change between folders in in-game mode then push steam button, you will be able to do it there. If it does not appear you should enable developer options in steam settings

Keep in mind that game files will be downloaded to the separate folder, the path will be: /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/<>/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ultima Online Outlands/ . These numbers will be generated randomly but you can just go to /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/ folder and just open the most recent one

Should you have a backup of your Data or Profile files from a previous installation and want to move it over to your newly created Bottles version of the game, click on the Browse C: option from above and navigate to Profiles folder (Program Files (x86) > Ultima Online Outlands > ClassicUO > Data > Profiles. Copy your backup files to that folder and relaunch the game. This video (not mine) is where I learned how to properly backup your game settings and preferences.

Should anyone have any questions about this installation process, feel free to hit me up on Discord (charred#5296). Good luck and see you in-game.
