Wordweavers Director's Cut
Q: 30 Oct—If your character had a themed vehicle, what would it be?
I already answered this, but I thought it might be fun to contact “alt Dio” to ask her too, as she's a bit different. Anyway, we chatted over lunch; her answer is below!
Hey alternate Dio?
Hn? Oh. Hey. What's up, other me?
So I was like, doing one of those writer hashtag things and I thought maybe it would be fun if you... we.. answered it as... us? Well. As you. They want to know your preferred method of transportation; themed or w/e and my answer would be like 'derp derp I like cars' or w/e, yours is more entertaining by far.
Pfft. It's not like you don't have your own stories about weird transport, other me. And you know me; I don’t have a themed vehicle.
Eh, true but I mean like... your stories are cooler. Given that, you know, you're an old lady with centuries of extra experience living in a fantasy world and all.
Old lady...!? You're like what, a few years younger or something? Our timelines aren't that out of sync, bitch! Ha ha ha fuck off. Old lady...
Pfahaha sorry! I had to. But will you? Answer, I mean?
Eh, fuck it. Sure! I need a break from studying anyway.
So the truth is, I miss cars sometimes. I mean, it's no secret that I lived in Earth Realm for... well, long enough to appreciate cars, right? I know, I know, the environment and pollution and I care, but I mean, seriously... I so miss being able to just like, pop into a car and zoom. You know? I loved my little car; I liked zooming and just kicking back and losing myself in music. I don't miss a lot about Earth Realm but I do miss that.
Here in this 'fantasy world'... which it is absolutely not, just so your readers are clear... my options are pretty limited. There's this idea that because I know magic I can just boop all over the place with magic or portals but that's not how it works. Portal stones are expensive to access and if there's not one where you're going, you're still walking a lot. Magic is exhausting, so it can work but not for like... really long distances. It's like, I don't know... only being able to fly into a hub airport in Earth Realm, but instead of cars you're walking or riding a horse or if you're lucky, taking a boat to get to your destination.
Okay but of the things you do have available, which is your favorite?
Hn. Actually, traveling by boat. I love the salty air and the sound of the sea and I sleep so well on a boat. Like, you know this but we actually get the good kind of seasick... we get super sleepy with rough seas so I actually... sleep. And spending time in the sun, doing manual labor instead of having to think is such a nice break from literally all of the things I usually do.
So not portals?
Ugh, fuck no. Portals are unpleasant, like vom inducing and I'm always worried something is going to go wrong and I'll end up lost, or turned inside out, or missing some limbs.
Shit, that can happen?
I mean, I don't know? And it isn't like I don't use them when I can afford to. Popping from Waterdeep to Candlekeep saves me weeks of travel, so yeah, I guess it's worth the risk. But I don't have that kind of coin to burn. I'm a student, you know?
Right. Yeah. Totally get that. What about your second favorite way to travel?
Honestly? I'm kind of into hitching. Okay shut up I know I know, it's totally stupid to hitch, but sitting on the back of some wagon and just watching stuffs go by, it's just relaxing, you know? Like... I don't get to disconnect a lot, so having time to just.... do nothing is nice. Is that... I dunno. I feel stupid for sharing.
What? No, come on, I get it. Like... that's why I like trains, really. Why you probably did too?
Oh! Yeah, I totally forgot about trains! I'll have to take a train next time I'm there.
Anyway, sorry to cut this off but like... I have to study and you have that thing to do.
AAH! Thanks, I'm almost late! Yeah. Hey, good studying, alternate me!
Thanks! Good... doing that other things, other me!
