Wow, https://github.com/renovatebot/renovate is an incredible tool. The level of configurability is almost frightening. I am REALLY excited about what we’re cooking up with it to help our teams keep their dependencies up to date. We have a long way to go, and it’s not something we will be able to do overnight, but starting to move in the right direction is huge. This is one of those things that will compound over time, as more teams adopt the tooling and get better at staying up to date.
In my book, the most powerful part of Renovate, beyond its sheer configurability, is the ability for us to craft a centrally-managed base config that each team can build on top of (if they want more customization) or just use as-is. This is something that (at least in my understanding) is much more difficult to pull off with Dependabot. My dream is to hone this base config that just works for 99% of use cases and teams in our org, along with some basic guidance on how teams can override and customize if/when they desire.
In non-tech stuff, I’ve been thinking a lot about writing Frankie a letter every year for her birthday, as a sort of point-in-time momento. She can’t read yet, but I think it will be super cool for her to read them later in life. I’m not sure what to put in it exactly though. Obviously I want to talk about what she does at the current age and how much we love her and how proud of her we are. I’m also tempted to just say a few things about what’s going on in the world and our adult lives these days. I guess the best way to think about it is this: if my parents had written letters like this for me every year of my life, what would I have wanted them to include?
