Death
As I was driving on the highway from Almería towards Málaga, the sky looked beautiful and the contrast to the dark sky in the rear view mirror was fascinating.
So I decided to take a photograph. It was a bit hard to line the mirror up in a way that it looked similar to what I had seen with my eyes. It took some focus.
Suddenly I realized that there was a motorbike standing on the right lane in front if ne and a man was sitting on its left, right next to the road, leaning backwards apparently to look at it from a lower perspective.
I didn't get dangerously close to him but I had to admit that sometimes when I focus on something like a photo I actually leave my lane slightly towards the right – usually that's not dangerous.
But in this case, I don't know if I would have reacted in time. The guy was kind of hard to see against the low sun. And hitting him at 100 km/h would have most likely killed him.
And for me... this would have been the most traumatizing experience of my life. Killing someone for a nice photo.
The probability of this happening... I don't know how high they were, but realistically I'd estimate around 1%. Not acceptable when it comes to needlessly killing people.
So this is it. No more photos while driving. No distractions. Luckily, the one person I always want to show the views I'm seeing will be sitting in the car with me from tomorrow. So no need to kill anyone.
But also good to remember how close death can be. Our lives are fragile and it's a miracle that we even made it this far.
