Pain
Today when I tried to loosen a nut with my fingers, I rammed a shard of glass-fiber under the nail of my left index-finger.
It was a short but not too strong burst of pain and soon blood started flowing out of the intersection between the nail and my fingertip. The pain subsided as I assessed how deep the shard had penetrated into my nail-bed – approximately 3 mm, not so deep.
Still, if I imagine pushing that shard under my fingernail very slowly, it would be much more painful. Isn't that interesting that speed plays a role here? If it happens slow and you have a chance of stopping it, the signal will get stronger and stronger, but if it happens very fast and there's no way of reversing it, the pain is much lighter, just there to notify you of the injury that just happened.
