In Llançà I walked past a cafeteria and thought about stopping to buy bread for tomorrow. But it looked pretty full and chaotic, so it took me a while to decide to go in.
Inside, a few people were waiting for their turn, but they weren't forming any recognizable line. Instead, when new people came in, they greeted the people they knew, mixed and talked. It was impossible for me to keep an overview and remember who came before or after me. It was just people coming and going and I decided to just wait and be patient.
When I was almost ready to leave without bread, the woman behind the counter asked who was next and the woman standing closest to the counter pointed at me, indicating that I had been there before her and everyone else.
I trusted her memory but I had no way of knowing whether she was correct. I admired her memory because I had no chance to remember all those faces.
