Reason vs. Intuition
Today I decided that I need some sort of sound system for my room.
Listening to music with the built-in notebook speakers is no fun.
So I went to finn.no to research what's on the market.
And I found a pair of KRK Rokit 5 Generation 3 active Studio Monitors for 2000 NOK. Quite expensive, but it's not going to get better for that money.
The problem: I will not be able to take them back with me.
Shipping them to Germany would cost at least 60€.
The alternative: A Bose Soundlink III for 1000 NOK or a JBL Flip 4 for 550 NOK.
These are fine speakers, but not exactly what I want, neither very, very clear, nor stereo. And taking them back home is also not exactly what I want because I've never really felt the need to have a Bluetooth Speaker.
So the middle way between both options would be to buy a pair of Pioneer DM-40 Active Monitors for 700 NOK. Not as beautiful and as clear and balanced as the Rokit 5, but still pretty good speakers.
Reason would say that to save money I'd have to choose the Pioneers.
But intuition says that I want the Rokits – all or nothing.
Reason then says that I will probably be able to sell them for at least 1500 NOK before I leave, so I end up paying 50€ for having them for five months. That's 10€ per month – about as much as four “cheap” cans of beer or one beer in a bar. So intuition has trumped reason.
UPDATE:
Reason has won after all! I found out that the Pioneers are a substantial bit smaller and at 5 kg for the pair they are also substantially lighter than the Rokits with 12 kg.
Also the volume adjustment in the front and the richer bass have made them win the race. Now we have the opposite situation: Reason has led forward and the feeling has followed. I'm looking forward to have some seriously good sound in a smaller and lighter package than with the Rokit 5.
Leaving them here will also be easier because if I can't sell them, they will be a more practical gift to my colleagues because they don't need a separate Audio Interface or a lot of care. After all they are just speakers for 70€ instead of 200€.
