General questions Re: The Covid-19 pandemic and crime.
1) How will the policing pull back effect victimization? Of course arrest numbers will plummet as the police are not making arrests unless absolutely necessary. But will there be an increase in victimization as a result of the criminals taking advantage of the police pull back. Or will the rate of reported crime and/or victimization remain the same. meaning that we really were over policing and the pandemic created a system correction?
2) Same with DUI arrests and traffic crashes. Most police departments have completely stopped proactive traffic enforcement. The argument for aggressive traffic enforcement was to a preventive measure for DUI and aggressive driving resulting in traffic crashes. Based on that reasoning you would expect a large increase in traffic crashes. What will the numbers show? Of course, at the same time, people are remanded to their homes so there are less people driving. There may actually be a large decrease in traffic crashes and it has nothing to do with traffic enforcement.
