Where the Sky Opens over the Lake
Here is a song I wrote. It's a love song from a 49 year old.
Where the Sky Opens over the Lake mp3 file
Lyrics
I'll lead you by the hand,
The where we choose together.
You walk behind, I clear the path
Enough for you and me,
Where the sky opens over the lake,
The Sun fallen from the sky,
The Moon behind the clounds
Over the purple of the slowly fading day.
We find we're not alone,
This path that we are warking.
The rocks and roots we can't remove
Touch tiny, stumbling feet.
Then in a blink they're grown
To walk along beside us.
They clear the path enough for us
To walk another day
Where the sky opens over the lake,
The Sun fallen from the sky,
The Moon behind the clounds
Over the purple of the slowly fading day.
Self-indulgent exposition
When we lived in graduate student housing at the University of Wisconsin, we would take walks through the woods at the edge of Lake Mendota. One of those walks is the source of the original images. The music was inspired by a girls camp melody my sisters sang when I was little. Here's the chorus I was thinking of while I played with melody for my song:
To write I song I could also perform, I kept the chords simple and used little patterns I've encountered in my classical guitar exercises to create the accompaniment. The vocal range is also small and comfortable. It's a beginner song written for a novice performer—-me.
The lyrics are based on a poem I wrote for my wife between 2005-2010, and finished in 2015:
Evening Walk
(2005-2010) 2015
I’d lead you by the hand,
but only where you want to go—
you tell me where.
I’ll clear the path,
walking just ahead,
sensing your touch on my hand
until we pass the wood
where the sky opens over the lake,
the sun fallen from the sky,
the moon behind the clouds
and one white stripe of clouds
refracting the sun
against the darkening blues,
and above the fading purple,
of the departing day.
