Castellón released an official statement on Sunday night announcing the sacking of manager Rubén Torrecilla with immediate effect. The man from Plascencia had been in charge for almost five months, taking over in July while the club was still under previous ownership.

It comes after a bad run of results for the Albinegres, who lost their top spot to Eldense in the last weekend of games before the Christmas break. With one win in the last five games, and five points from a possible 18 in their last six games, the club decided to take action ahead of the Christmas break and January transfer window.

“The club is very grateful for all the work done in last four and half months. Further information will be given in the coming days. The club’s ambition to reach the top level of Spanish football is as strong as ever.”, the statement read.

In follow-up interview with El Periodico Mediterráneo, president Bob Voulgaris elaborated on the decision, highlighting the ambition to get promoted as soon as this season.

“We think that the current team, with some additional signings we plan to bring in January, has a chance to get promoted this season. Our job is to ensure that every part of our way of working as a club guarantees that potential becomes reality, and this decision was made with that in mind”, Voulgaris said.

“We have a clear idea of the characteristics we want in a manager. It’s just about the experience in a certain country or league, it’s also about their philosophy and their willingness to work together with the team and extensive experience we have. I firmly believe we have to think differently to win, have an open mind to new ways of working and using data. Those are key characteristics for our new manager”, he continued.

Voulgaris also confirmed the sporting structure at the club, made up of himself, Dave Reddin and Jack Lynch all in different roles, and a new head of recruitment who will be announced in a couple of weeks.
