A time when dollar bills became toilet paper
Loung Ung was only a little girl when the Khmer Rouge took over control of Cambodia, or Kampuchea, as it was then known.
Besides practising violence and murders, the Khmer Rouge also declared the existing money system to be worthless.
Thus, when Loung Ung wanted to empty her bowels one evening, her mother said: “here, use this to wipe yourself.”
“But, this is money, Mother!”
“It has no use now.”
