“Beautiful world, where are you?”
Yesterday I attended a music performance in Singapore, titled “Where is Spring?” ( https://www.esplanade.com/festivals-and-series/huayi-chinese-festival-of-arts/2022/where-is-spring?tabid=e164c1cf-7956-454d-b552-b45fc5a02f5c )
The performer said the title had philosophical references. But seeing that the audience seemed to be unresponsive to philosophy, the performer stopped elaborating about the choice of title, and proceeded to sing and dance.
But, by my guess, the likely reference is to “Die Götter Griechenlands”, by Friedrich von Schiller. (1759 – 1805). In particular, a line that goes: “Schöne Welt, wo bist du?” (Beautiful world, where are you?). Famously popularised in music by Schubert. (More info: https://www.oxfordlieder.co.uk/song/920 )
I'm pleasantly surprised to hear yesterday's performer make such a reference, but also sad that the audience expressed no interest in it.
Anyway, it seems a suitable cry, or lament, in these times of Covid: “beautiful world, where are you?”
