POTUS Bring in the Clowns
Hello again. I hope you are having fun.
POTUS, with the help of the US Senate majority leader, John Thune of South Dakota, has decided to change the rules of that distinguished body by permitting a single up or down vote on groups of POTUS nominees for federal positions. So, if there is one really good nominee in the group and dozens of really bad ones. the Senate must vote on the whole bloc at once. No picking and choosing!
Part of the job of the Senate is to “advise and consent” on the people that POTUS has picked for federal positions. Since the beginning of the Republic the Senate has done this one candidate at a time. POTUS has lots of positions to fill, and in order to get some really bad actors into those roles, he has asked that the traditions of the Senate be modified.
Traditions are the rules which both sides have agreed on. This agreement allows for majority rule with minority rights. The problem with the changes that John Thune is proposing is that it does not take into account the distinct possibility that his party may not be in the majority in the Senate after 2026 and people he doesn't like will be put into positions he would object to, or worse yet, not be filled. Many public positions are required to be filled in order to make the government run efficiently.
Let me give you an example. If 'Organization A' is supposed to be run by 'Director A' and 'Deputy Director A', and those positions are not filled by the Senate, then 'Organization A' won't get anything done when documents require a signature from 'Director A' or 'Deputy Director A'. There is no appointee there to do the job.
So, to ensure that all the organizations are running, John Thune has decided to lump the baddies in with the good ones. Many of the baddies are simply sycophants who want to be paid for bowing to the demand of POTUS. Is that what we really want? Well, ready or not, here come the clowns.
