Here..Take My Advice..
I love hearing out people or just lending a pair of non-judgemental ears to their rants/worries/ramblings. But I was doing it the wrong way.
When someone’s ranting, I immediately jump on to saying stuff like
- You should be doing this.
- Did you try that?
- I think you should look at it from this lens!
- I think you’re being too hard on yourself. Here’s what you should be doing.
And so on..
A friend pointed out that all she wanted was someone to hear her out! And that’s when the reality hit.
When people are ranting, they’re NEVER looking for a solution. They’re looking for someone who will make them feel heard.
Eventually, all of us will figure our way out. Don’t try to be an “Answer machine”. And always ask “Do you want me to hear? Or offer a perspective?”
