5e House Rule: Critical Hits
When a player rolls a critical hit (Natural 20) on an attack roll, they do the maximum normal damage plus the damage die roll.
Example: Nevias the Halfling Barbarian gets a critical hit while Raging with his comically large warhammer, which he is wielding two-handed. Normally, this would do damage equal to 1d10 plus his Strength modifier (+4) and his Rage damage (+2).
1d10+4+2
Meaning that his normal maximum possible damage is 16, making his critical hit roll:
1d10+16
Nevias rolls a 7, doing 23 points of bludgeoning damage to the zombie that is lurching toward him. Cue the victory theme!
