Alright better start this off right.

Hello all, Nemes here. I behind the Youtube Channel Nemes Content where I make mostly Tech and Video Game related videos and some shorts from time to time. All with make dumb brand of humour that I guess some people like.

Recently I’ve been looking into Fediverse stuff again due the state of twitter, and seeing a content creator or two joining the network. As a result, I made a mastodon account over on Ohai.social only to jump a week later over to Mstdn.ca because… Canada. I am Canadian. Not overly complicated.

But in addition to my new interest in the this different approach to social media, I’ve recently wanted to get into blogging. So, 2000s-2010s right? Well I ran into an issue with my videos where while I know that I could make them semi consistently now due to a certain capture card causing my to produce videos every month from August – November. However, I know that I can’t always keep up with that especially since I work full time now.

BUT! I do write out all my videos before filming. I’m actually sitting on a lot of videos and topics I want to make videos on but other videos end up taking priority for a number of reasons like interest and being faster to put out.

And so I thought starting a blog might be a good idea for both updates on the videos, and to just get some topics out on the interwebs. Either Topics that don’t fit the Channel nicely or Topics that would take quite a bit of time to make. Not every topic that I would want on the blog I want would be blog exclusive, a lot would.

All because I wanna say stuff and can’t always pull out the camera.

So this brings be to writefreely, or the paid platform I’m on write.as.

Why Write As / WriteFreely?

While I had my eye on a few services, I ultimately decided on WriteFreely/Write.as instance for a few reasons.

Has All The Features I Need

Ultimately, I needed to make sure that if I was to use a service that it had the features that I wanted or that I could add in later. These were mainly the following:

1. Comprehensive yet easy format editing, Ideally including embedding

2. Automatic RSS feed creation or manually add in RSS functionality after the fact

Not very extensive, just absolutely basic, and easy to use. WriteFreely meets these features sets either with software itself, or with an instance like write.as (with the Pro pricing, not sure what other instances are like). Similar features of Tumblr and Blogger but with the neat part of being part of the fediverse!

Federation on the Fediverse

Writefreely can federate with the rest of the fediverse that uses the activitypub protocol. Naturally already being on a mastodon instance made that this choice even better! Being part of the Fediverse means that it has reach via federating with other the platforms such as mastodon, friendica, and others!

I think the interoperability of the decentralized Network very neat guys.

I just think the fediverse is neat.

Why pay for Write.As and not join a different instance or Self-host?

While part of paying for the development of software is always a good thing.

Also write.as Pro has other features that I knew for sure I was gonna use. Namely snap.as as a convenient way of having images on the blogs without it being a separate service.

Also I’m too lazy (and unknowledgeable) to self host, and know I will screw it up at this stage. Also since it’s just me it makes sense to pay for the Pro license rather than paying for a whole server. Plus I got the Black Friday price.

We’ll pay for one year and see were it goes from there.

Why Not X Service?

I also consider many other options for blog. I’ll only discuss each in short paragraph or two.

Blogger

Oldest blogging platform and linked to google services. Seems like natural beginning platform for blogging with little hassle. But on the other hand… It’s Google. Irony of submitting on YouTube aside, Youtube probably has a future for a few more years before google even considers plug and I don’t think they will.

But Blogger on the other hand might not be so lucky. I’ve literally only gone on a “Blogspot” recently because of voting system research, and one fellow fediverse user who was jumping ship. I don’t think many people seriously using blogger in 2020. (But feel free to prove me wrong)

Substack

This was super tempting to me as it CAN be used as a blogging platform with the prospects to be used as a patreon alternative. Had the features I want (RSS), it was having some interesting features done the pipe (Dat video support yo), and I was about to take the plunge. My main reason against using the platform personally is that due to the light touch of moderation, the platform is known for spreading Covid-19 Misinformation (among “Fun” controversies). While you can make the argument Platforms are merely tools for creators to use, and not a reflection of the creator themselves (All kinds make up any platform after all), it does not personally feel comfortable building a following on such a service.

I’d be less adverse to that if it was for the fact I could self host a substack away from the main network, but alas it is another proprietary siloed platform. Though you can move your data to another service, so that’s a plus.

Ghost (and probably include Wordpress as well)

I want to use ghost… but I’m not ready. Like an RPG maker game, you need to put in a lot of work to make worth while. I’ll be looking into it down the road if I was to ever monetize my content, but I definitely need to learn html AT LEAST before then.

Tumblr

Ah Tumblr… I remember you from my youth… I like it’s chaos I just don’t want make blog on there… though this might be a “for now” considering they’ll be joining the fediverse.

NeoCities

Neocities is neat! I even want to make website with it to learn HTML. But I want that be its own project not so closely related to the channel. I kind of want it be an art piece of sorts. But that’s a 2023 project.

Why Name the Blog “Rambles Well Written”?

So one question you might ask is what’s with the name? “Why Rambles Well Written and not Nemes Content blog or something!”

Well as I have mentioned as in the description of this blog, I don’t shut up. I ramble a lot with my friends and with my content I try to edit down into something with decent communication for the videos. Hence the Name.

I also really REALLY like alliteration.

I’ll being editing the blog over the next couple weeks as well you add static pages to blog as well. So feel free to Subscribe via RSS! Or follow via the fediverse! I’ll be sure to update this… er… whenever. I guarantee you that this Rambles will be as Well Written as my ability would allow.
