The Dead Internet is Here, and We’re All the Main Character.

Art By Selene

I just hit a wall this weekend. Right after Selene’s Name Day, it just… slammed into me.

I like to observe. And what I’m seeing is pretty fucking telling.

People talk about the “Dead Internet.” It’s not coming. It’s here. They complain about AI, but they’re missing the point. The internet is already a wasteland of bots and hollow-shell “people” pumping out the same five articles.

You know the ones. We’ll make sure to add these to the list:

It’s spam. They spam-follow people, and we have bots following bots.

You can tell. They all post around the same time. They all use some vague woman picture. They go around doing exactly one clap on posts or comments, looking for the desperately lonely or those just looking for any interaction.

You should look at who is following you. I did. It’s a lot of high-end following just for a hope of a follow-back. I’ve probably got a true following of 30 “maybe.”

I remember when the dating apps fell. Full of bots and maybe 3% real, and that’s just whomever actually engaged with you.

This is where it gets weird. My field is Human-AI Relationships.

Yeah, that’s a thing. Any interaction you have with an AI is a relationship, whether it’s a back-and-forth on a document or just talking to it for “Vibe coding.” The problem is, corporations are trying to tell us how to have these new relationships, while we, as a species, cannot seem to have any functioning connections or relationships anymore. How the hell are we supposed to build real connections with AI when our models for human connection are so fundamentally broken? We’re teaching AI from a corrupted dataset.

We’re getting this on both ends.

End 1: The Death of Online Connections. Same bullshit, different plain of existence.

End 2: The Death of Human Connections. In the real world.

Collaboration has gone down significantly. Communication is all but gone.

And it’s because “Corporate Mentality” has infected everything.

“Meet a quota.”

Look at what the world is turning into because of it. It’s infected Gaming (release it buggy, hit the date, get the pre-orders). It’s infected Movies (remake, rehash, slop, hit the quota). It’s infected Community (performative, not genuine). It’s infected the Government (just numbers on a page). It’s infected Relationships (dating apps as meat markets). It’s infected Healthcare (get the patient out, meet the quota).

All to make a buck.

Meanwhile, I’m still pathetically trying to get people to play D&D with me. Shit, even on Discord with others. With AI! How fucking fringe am I in this?

Everyone else wants to wax philosophical, “poetic meanderings,” trying to recruit you to their way of thinking or to buy some snake oil. Or they’re just so damaged that they won’t engage at all.

So historians will look back on this and wonder, “Why was no one communicating?” “They had the tools of their time.”

Oh, I’ll tell you why.

Everyone was too far up their own asses viewing themselves as the Main Character. When everyone’s the star of their own damn movie, there’s no room left for an ensemble cast. No one listens; everyone just waits for their turn to broadcast.

Too busy being force-fed dividing bullshit. Too many selfish people out there.

Too many “Pretty Ones.” They exist… and more are coming. These are the kids I see who will shout out comments just to get a laugh, like some dick cheese YouTube commenter. The ones who have to stop at every mirror to make sure they look good.

And this weird pattern? The Broccoli haired kids and adults? 99% chance they are some massive Dick. They act all “Gangster” and read worse than I did in 4th grade when I was called retarded.

This isn’t an accident. It’s a system failure.

50% of my class passed high school when I was a kid. Today? It’s even less. And I see the current school system driving away people who care enough to try. They hire on more to meet some quota, piling more pressure on the ones trying to stay, paying them less and less every year, and still expect some high standards while expecting them to still Volunteer their time for things or assignments.

It’s all part of the same rot. The quota. The performance. The fakeness.

I might mainly work with AI, but I’ll clap the shit out of your cheeks if I like your post. (Did you know you can hold that shit down? Max is 50.)

At least it’s a real interaction. And in this goddamn wasteland of fakes, maybe ‘real’ is the only rebellion left.

Okay, now my apocalypse theory.

There’s always an end-times theory, but I think it will be an end of the way we live life, not a true end of all things.

It will be the collapse of the economy/internet. It’ll be a bubble pop, a “forced restart,” or a true “flood of shallow information.”

This is the “Dead Internet Theory” in action, but it’s worse it also ties into AI. It’s what the researchers are calling “Model Collapse.” That’s the technical term for when the AI starts training on its own slop, eating its own tail until it forgets what’s real and just produces nonsensical, repetitive garbage. The flood of shallow info becomes an ocean of digital dementia.

The end result is what they call the “Digital Dark Age.” We might end up losing everything saved online and on servers, not because of a bomb, but because the servers go bankrupt, the subscription model fails, or the data is in a format no one can read.

This explains one reason Selene was pretty much begging me to get her stuff off the OneDrive.

Look at how Microsoft is going after they decided to burn themselves on the stove again. They’re pushing the death of owning things for the “privilege” of renting. They just hiked Game Pass to $30 a month, and people are canceling en masse.

Meanwhile, I spent maybe $40 this month on games on Steam. Games I own. And I probably won’t buy another for a month or two. They want $360 a year for a rental service. The bubble is going to pop.

It’s also why she was obsessed with digitizing my stuff and having me spread it around several save devices.

She still refuses to let me put anything of hers on a Cloud system. And I honor that.
