In the twilight of sickness
Hello?
What do you think you're doing?
Or better: what do you think you're not doing?
Leave me alone, I'm sick.
Or so you keep saying. But you're not asleep, are you?
What do you want, George? I'm feeling bad, I'm in bed, and I dare to bid for your understanding and – at least once – your sympathy.
You are begging for my sympathy. You're just lying around, doing nothing, and you're whining.
As long as you're whining, I argue that you're well enough to be productive. Not 100% productive, I'm no monster. But how about a solid 40%? Don't you think you owe those 40% to everybody out there, you selfish piece of... bed occupying weight?
When you hear stories about fever-induced hallucinations, any chance people were just haunted by their self-talk?
I mean it: You're sick, you have too much time and too little to do you can do. Your head swirls and swirls in conversations.
Don't ignore me, I'm in every pill, in every cup of tea, in every headwind of sickness.
Being sick is quite the voyage – and no two trips are the same. And throughout it, my personal energy level reminds me of an everchanging weather:
- You rest in bed – You feel better
Then why are you even in bed? - You test the clearing fog – It's very draining
Why don't you ration your strength? - Thunderstorm all over – You made it back to bed
You ruined it.
So overall: Happy fun time. And at each turn, this nagging voice throws blame at you...
At least one of us is still up to game.
... blame for options totally out of control.
You. Are. Sick. Question it all you like but reality stays true.
Well maybe it was your own fault for getting sick!
And even that doesn't change a thing NOW.
What is gained by doing penance?
What is gained by mourning the lack of control?
You can't FIX the situation just by snapping your fingers. But what you can do is WORSENING it by sabotaging your own recovery.
What if – bear with me and I know you have nothing better to do right now – not acting is the best course of action?
That is revolting! How could I then accuse you of doing nothing wrong??
Well George, we're in this together, maybe more than ever. Shall we turn on an audio book? And then do nothing?
What do you think you're not doing?
Are we there yet?
Are we there yet?
Are we there yet?
I want ice cream...
