26 Sept. 2025. President Trump announced yesterday new 50 percent tariffs on imported kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities in a Truth Social post. U.S. manufacturers asked for these tariffs in a July 2025 news conference. I photo'd that news conference, with images of two key lawmakers now in our Alamy portfolio.
On 16 July, the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance or AKCA invited Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), and the news media to hear industry executives tell of cheap imported cabinets, severely undercutting domestic manufacturers. The industry speakers, from small family-owned businesses in the U.S. South, called for an investigation of these Chinese imports on national security.
Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act allows for investigations of imports that may affect U.S. national security. At the July news conference, the executives asked for a section 232 investigation of kitchen cabinet imports. And their national security connection? American-made kitchen cabinets are used in military family base housing.
In Trump's post yesterday he said the reason for the tariffs is “large-scale 'FLOODING' of these products into the United States by other outside Countries. It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process.” He did not elaborate.
