There was a popular teen magazine that I read when I was in elementary. I wasn't a teenager, but I grew up faster than the rest of them combined so that was appropriate.
They had short stories submitted by young adults from different regions. I always wanted to be featured in that magazine when I grew up. But traditional newspaper was already over in junior high so that blew.
Different regions have different voices of writing. The North is more traditional so the writing was more formal, distant and philosophical. The South had better weather, better agriculture so the writing was more happy and innocent, often about relationship between families and schools.
The Central used a lot of regional dialect so I picked up many words none of people around me knew. We collected old clothes to donate to that region as they often had floods many times a year. It's different now that we get updates through online news and social media. But back then it was stories in children's magazines.
