I Am Me
There’s so much about me to know
All of it, I’m willing to show
But you aren’t going to take the time to look
Only flip through your outdated book
trying to neatly categorize me
all the while, refusing to recognize me
to see what makes me truly unique
because it’s so much easier to critique
than to try to understand
that I don’t follow your plan
There is so much more to me
than you will ever see
You can’t tie me down with chains and locks
I don’t fit inside your box
I need to spread my wings and fly free
then everyone will know that I am me
You keep calling me names
trying to make me feel ashamed
forcing me to hide
the real me deep inside
But you’re not going to get to me
I want everyone to get to see
The beauty I have to share
I know there are people who care
I refuse to let myself feel terrible
just because you can’t see what makes me special
There is so much more to me
than your closed mind will ever be able to see
you can’t cram me into your box
and bury me underneath the rocks
I’ll break out and fly away free
then everyone will see that I am me
