A constant screening of life’s outtakes
So I kept my distance from you
Always so ashamed to be near you

Why didn’t you know back then
Messing up again and again
Why didn’t you ever learn?
Playing with fire long after you got burned

I’d forgotten

I’d forgotten how hard you had it
Losing every one of your gambits
Walking through an endless fog
Fear dragging you down into the bog

I’d forgotten how alone you felt
Hiding from all the pain life dealt
Trying to laugh it all away
Heedless of who or what got in the way

I’d forgotten how much you wanted to try
How hard it was to learn to fly
I’d forgotten all the good in you
I’d forgotten that I used to be you

I’ll try to remember
I’ll try to be kinder
Because I couldn’t have flown today
if you hadn’t fallen yesterday
