Taiko no Tatsujin
Taiko no Tatsujin is a rhythm game series created by Namco. First let's check out this video of the game in action:
Looks like a fun time, eh? Well I'm here to tell you that it is indeed a fun time and that you don't need to go to a Japanese arcade to join in! Although I was in fact introduced to the game at an arcade in Japan there are also home console versions available.
For those who didn't quite take in the game through all the madness on screen I shall describe it further. Remember Rock Band? Specifically remember the drum controller from Rock Band? Taiko no Tatsujin is kinda like that except with a taiko drum instead of a drum kit. When a red note goes into the circle on the left side of the screen you hit the face of the drum and when a blue note does the same you hit the side of the drum. Easy right?
Well the truth is I've been playing Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! (a version of the game for the Nintendo Switch) for months and I can only clear a few of the songs on the hardest difficulty known as "Oni" (or "Extreme"). So it gets challenging despite the simple premise.
If you own a Switch, while I would definitely recommend buying the separate drum controller, you can also use buttons or the motion control options to play Drum 'n' Fun. Another tip is that the game itself goes on sale in the eshop often so watch for that.
There is a version of the game available on the PS4 as well as a second game for the Switch. Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythmic Adventure Pack is focused on its story mode that honestly isn't great. You can still play the regular mode but I think there are only a few songs on it that are not in Drum 'n' Fun.
As much fun as Taiko no Tatsujin is at home I would highly suggest trying an arcade version if you ever see a cabinet in the wild. The drum and sticks will be higher quality in an arcade (unless maybe you splurge for the Taiko Force Lv5) and an arcade is just a fun atmosphere.
