I have been a member of the LA Fitness Gym in New Hyde Park (LAFNHP) for the past four years. I was shocked to hear about a shooting at the gym.

On August 1, 2022, at 9:06 pm, two LAFNHP members argued and fought on the basketball court. One of the two members pulled out a gun.

I spoke with fellow gym members and employees in general conversation. All the following came from them:

A LAFNHP employee told me:

“gunman shot indirectly at the other member.”

A member who was on the court at the time of the incident told me the following:

“I played with him all the time. We've asked him not to carry.” “The gunman shot in the direction of the other member.” “After shooting, he exited the basketball court and ran with a target bag over his head.”

At the time of this post, the gunman has not been apprehended.

In February 2022, at 9:00 pm, a female LAFNHP member was intoxicated while inside the gym. Here was the police statement after arresting the female:

“As police attempted to render aid and transport the defendant to a local hospital for treatment, she became combative and physically fought with the officers,” the police said in a statement. “She punched an officer in the face causing a laceration to his lip, and bit another officer in his forearm, causing substantial pain and bruising.”

Bumping into an employee at a local business, I asked what was going to be done to increase security, and she replied:

“they are bringing in security.”

After the shooting incident, internet messages encouraged residents to lock doors, but what stood for out for me was a comment about poor neighborhood lighting.
