A Place for My Ideas

Ahura Mazda in Disco Elysium (2019 game)

I really love the ZA/UM's game: Disco Elysium. As many critics, and players have already pointed out, it is one of the best role-playing-game ever made. A true gem that you had to wait since 1999 after playing the Planescape: Torment.

The characters/setting/themes of Disco Elysium deserve a separate and dedicated posts. Regardless, I have to say that the reason I loved Disco Elysium is its political depth.
Anyway, as I was replaying the game, I noticed a word that made me shocked: the mention of Ahura Mazda. If you are not familiar with the Persian religion Zoroastrian, this is the definition of “Ahura Mazda” in WordWeb dictionary:

“Chief deity of Zoroastrianism, source of light and embodiment of good.”

Nietzsche's famous quotation of “death of God” is from his “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” book.

Now, back to the Disco Elysium. While you are investigating a drug cartel related to a crime syndicate in Revachol West this is what Detective Kim Kitsuragi has to say:

”..., but really they're just violent gangs vying for control on the West side of Revachol with *cool” names,” he adds with contempt. “Like *La Puta Madre” and Ahura Mazda. It is a dark parody.”
