Thoughts, Musings, and Notes

Borderlands and high expectations

I said I would do two, so here we are. I did not end up playing any games today like I originally planned, but I did pick a new one up that I've been putting off for a while: Borderlands 3.

To begin, Borderlands 2 is probably one of my top games of the last decade. It's stood the test of time and I've loved it since day one. It was the first game I pre-ordered and I played it constantly through its first year. When the Pre-Sequel released, I actually avoided it, not because it looked bad or anything, but I was afraid it would lessen the experience of Borderlands 2. So I knew nothing about it.

Fast forward to about two years ago and I picked up the Handsome Collection on my PS4 to play through it again. I was able to experience the game I loved all over again and it was wonderful. I grinded my way to the level cap and did a bit of raid boss farming. I decided to start the Pre-Sequel after obtaining the platinum trophy in BL2. I got through about 2-4 hours of playtime before I got bored of it and went back to playing BL2.

The third entry was right around the corner, and I avoided as much information as I could like I did with the Pre-Sequel. I wasn’t as excited for it like I was back in the day for Borderlands 2, so I didn’t pre-order either. However, I knew that I was in a better position to bite the bullet and try the game out in the future. A friend recently picked it up and let me know it was on sale at a local shop. I had store credit as well, so I ended up getting it for $10. Our schedules don’t line up all that well, so it will be a few weeks before I play, but I plan on giving it a fair shot.

All in all, I find it interesting how we (or at least, I) will avoid the sequels to good things out of fear it will lessen the thing that we loved from the past. I can think of several sequels that I need to give fair shots still. Hopefully Borderlands 3 will be good and I can give those other franchises a shot.
