A Letter to the Twins

Ripped from the pages of imagination to live as a fabricated memory.
Dear Lorien and Seren,
You have lived in me longer
than you will ever know.
Before you had a name,
before you were a spark in my mind,
you were a possibility—
children imagined,
a whisper between two hearts
twenty-five years ago.
You are the dream of
what could have been:
passionate,
smart,
graceful,
musical.
Readers on the beach,
Builders of castles
And storms,
Born of laughter and longings
An explosion in
creative minds and hearts.
I do not know
if you will ever belong
to the world of the living,
or only to the hidden world
inside me.
But I know this:
You are mine,
not because I ever held you,
but because
I have carried you.
In silence,
Through years of pretending,
When no one else
knew your name.
And now, having a name,
you feel more real than ever.
I write this so
you cannot be erased
by silence or absence,
so you will not vanish
with a key pressed in haste.
You are written in me,
etched in memory
and yearning,
and I will keep you.
If you are never born,
you are still of me.
If you never walk this earth,
know that you
were dreamed into a fullness
that most children never are.
If this letter
is all there ever is of you,
my little ones,
I rest easy knowing
I protected you
from those things
I feared most in this world.
I'm sorry if that
cost you an existence.
But that is far better
than the reality
I and so many others have known.
Sleep on in me, Lorien.
Rest easy, Seren.
You are my secret,
my ache,
my proof
that love can imagine
beyond itself.
With love,
A father-that-never-was.
