Breakfast Musings

Breakfast today is a splurge:

2 eggs over medium, crispy bacon, fruit be biscuit and gravy. I no longer eat this way. On purpose. I’m attempting to reclaim >210 weight. 208 is the goal, surely 15 pounds is achievable! But Cracker Barrel is doing its damnest to slow that journey.
I do not like this restaurant, but she does. I think it used to feel quaint to me, perhaps for her it still does. But the charm was lost long ago with my love for frozen foods.
The decor is charming but clearly designed by intent and not the ‘found junk’ aesthetic they are emulating. You can tell because everything is too consistent here. As it is in EVERY instance of this eatery across America.
A hanged print on the wall is an old Popular Science magazine cover. July edition. No year but the cover art is dated 1933. It is a painting of a 45’ sailing yacht. Two smart looking fellows sit in the wheelhouse wearing captains hats, white pants and blue sailing blazers. This is a time when dressing well was an aspiration. Instead of sails, the vessel has two spinning top-looking things. I assume they are some kind of energy generators. It recalls a time when magazines like this represented hope and possibility. Zaney ideas were pitched as potentially revolutionary.
Personally, they take me back to the mid 70’s where I could discover stacks of these kinds of things at school or the library or my grandparents. They never delivered of course. But they were SUCH a joy to pick up. Each one you knew was the discovery of a lifetime.
I am torn between wishing for the simpler days and being thankful I escaped the trauma years of chapters two and three to become a mostly functional adult. It’s funny how memory is… we always manage to guild the past in a way that reality simply cannot.
