Set It Free
Everyone needs a creative release valve.
I think often of the emotional trauma and failures in my life and how frequently they manifest in something I’m writing, drawing or whatever-ing about. A while back, I was speaking with a friend who was expressing some struggles they were going through. I suggested writing or drawing and they produced a volume from a creative writing class that was just magnificent. All these ideas and stories spilled onto the page. It was great. It taught me that just because someone doesn’t herald to the world that they are getting these demons out, doesn’t mean they aren’t. I mean look at Henry Darger. Now, that guy was crazy… but what I mean is, he was doing work that helped him manage his mental illness without the world even knowing he existed until after he died. Par for the course as artists. The point is, making work is good for the soul. Making a living from is is much much less so.
