Laughter is a Healing

With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?
How can one possibly expect to feel blue on a night like this?!
Our silver specter is blossoming fully tonight—not quite full, but radiant enough to make Paris, Barcelona, or Gibraltar as majestic as they ever were. If only one could be anywhere in the world tonight, it would be unforgettable. In this moonlight, even the mundane is magical!
What shifted from the melancholy day? No doubt the nap did wonders—but an hour with a book is medicine, the right book is like the laying on of hands!
Tonight is some poetry, a little Royal Road, but the most powerful anathema to the days shroud is in Proverbs chapter 13:
Whoever neglects discipline comes to poverty and disgrace, but the one accepting correction will be glorified. Desire when realized is sweet to a person, but the stupid hate to turn away from bad. The one walking with the wise will become wise, but the one who has dealings with the stupid will fare badly. Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. The good person leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth will be stored up for the righteous one. The plowed field of the poor yields much food, but it may be swept away by injustice. Whoever holds back his rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently. The righteous one eats and satisfies his appetite, but the stomach of the wicked is empty.
It’s a sweeping conversation about the power of goodness and looking to the light when the call of darkness and selfishness pulls at our hearts and minds. There are so many empty promises in our world. True fulfillment comes from the excelling value of the knowledge of God.
And what better way to reinforce the light and blow out the cobwebs of funk than with a hilarious film and chocolate cake?
Yes, my upbuilding evening veered into near decadence with a rich, moist slice of gooey, sweet cake. A rare treat—I’ll regret the sugar and oils later—but in the moment, parts of my brain are shooting lightning bolts across the room from how amazing this flavor is. I’m glad we only bought a single slice. I don’t think I have the self-control to handle a whole cake.
We try a war drama recommended by a friend (All the Light We Cannot See), but it’s too dreary and dour for this newly transformed night, so we jettison it for one of our favorite films: Bowfinger!
From the opening credits, I can tell we’ve made the right choice. For the next 90 minutes, we laugh and marvel at the comic genius of Martin and Murphy.
Bobby Bowfinger is a fading never-was at the doorstep of 50 (though, with effort, he could pass for 38!). In a Hail Mary play, he cons his friends and crew into filming a new script—Chubby Rain—without the permission of the star, Kit Ramsey (played to perfection by Eddie Murphy).
The film’s ridiculous premise makes Martin’s character both sympathetic and pathetic. His desperation and passion fuel masterful scenarios that rely on the total trust of his team. And in the end, that trust is rewarded in an unconventional and unexpectedly satisfying way.
Playing alongside a stunning Heather Graham and Christine Baranski, Jamie Kennedy, Robert Downey Jr., and Terence Stamp elevate the film from schlock to cult classic. Bowfinger belongs in the company of films like Office Space and Idiocracy—box office underdogs that gained cult status over time.
The movie is simply hilarious and indulges in one clever premise after another. The Wolf recommends!
Having an off day?
The Wolf prescribes:
1. Rest
2. Brilliant silver moon
3. Words of wisdom
4. Chocolate cake
5. Bowfinger
You'll be feeling right as chubby rain in no time!
Bonne nuit!
