Renoir's Fancy
Remembering imagined lives
All of you is too much,
none, too little.
Eyes closed—whispers, breath, warmth, glow, hair, skin
—apparition real.
Wonder, wonder, wonder…
the moment imagined—or memory.
Duty shelved for the twilight walk
through this garden of what-if.
Picnics and passions on
warm spring afternoons;
boats by lakes with
parasols and loons.
Languid tales of days long ago,
Traded between two hearts made one.
I am undone by you.
Ruined by presence of such beauty, of such—day.
What came next for our party but
the mooring of our slip and stowing of paddles—
and the soft ache of water
lapping where we once were?
Yes, I am aware this is a painting by John Singer Sargent. But Sargent's fancy just didn't have the same ring. And I have a preference for Renoir in most cases. In this one, An Outdoor Study was just too perfect.
This is a poster from my personal collection. I always loved it. Hanging on my wall for about 10 years before going on ice in my flat files.
Flat files. That’s a new one to most people. Half a room in my home is dedicated to a lifetime of collected art and art papers. I love them all. I dream of a home and resources enough to display them all.
A decade ago when we moved, we cleared out a large portion by covering the walls of our empty home with work we no longer wished to home. It was the best gallery show we ever did. 100% sold out.
