The Fire
do not go gentle
into that good
night
Creativity is like
Plunging into the
Heart of the
Fire
When it cools
We
Are
Lost
A professional artist delivers upon demand. This is difficult and usually devoid of the soulical nature of the kind of work most artists desire to make. But arguing that one has to be 'in the mood' calls to mind Hebert's quote in Dune by Gurney Halleck when Paul Atreides begs off his morning training,
“What has mood to do with it? ...when the necessity arises—no matter the mood! Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset.”
In general an artist should just be ready to leap and watch the net appear. There are times, however, when it's like a fountain you just cannot turn off. Words, images and ideas just flood the imagination, begging to get out and be recorded. This is like striking a vein of gold. Or sometimes pyrite. In any case, when you're hot, you’re hot.
Diving in and bathing in that brilliant heat feels incredible. And it isn't about the audience. If we make work that is genuine to us without worrying if it's good or bad or right or wrong... it will usually connect with people. Now, whether people will see it or not is another matter.
FINISHING and shipping work is another matter altogether.
Just leap. The net will appear. Or, you'll die. In either case, you have nothing to worry about.
