We all have stories, these are mine. I tell them with a heart full of love and through eyes of kindness.

Unconditional Love

It's harder than you might think. Some hearts hold a particular person quietly, faithfully—whether or not they ever get to say it aloud.

Love is a word bandied so wildly now, most only know it in terms of passionate or physical response to attention. But to really love a person, it involves accepting the hard parts too.

The 'no'. The denial. The silence.

What can seem like a negative in the short term bears fruit in the long. Children are a good example of that.

If we give a child every desire of their heart, we ruin them. Better to let them know there are limits to what they can do and have. Look at the world at large for an example of what goes down when we cave to every whim.

I have a friend who is facing a challenging situation right now. I hope they can be strong and know that if it was easy, everyone would do it. I hope they know they have the love and support of those who truly care for them.

As an aging man with no children, sometimes I long for the unconditional love they give and that we, in turn, give back. This is especially true for someone pathologically wired to want everyone to like them. Children and family in general may not always feel that warm fuzzy feeling—but they keep you in their heart. Even if they forget for a while, you're still there.

Some of us never forget. Some of us are still there.

My mother always said, “Be kinder to everyone than is necessary, for we are all facing hardships no one knows about.”

My prayer is that those with my friend today are kind and supportive in her hour of difficulty. A bright smile, colorful personality and a little dancing do wonders to overcome the weight of sorrow.

Soldier on, dear reader.

Soldier on.
