Paul holds up an example from the story of Exodus as a mirror to his Corinthian Christians to see themselves more clearly – A people who thought they were privileged and set apart, we're just as liable to God's judgement as the ones they set themselves apart from. Let their story be a warning to us, lest we share their fate too.
Let me remind you, my friends, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all of them passed through the Red Sea; so they all received baptism into the fellowship of Moses in cloud and sea. They all ate the same supernatural food, and all drank the same supernatural drink; for they drank from the supernatural rock that accompanied their travels — and that rock was Christ. Yet most of them were not accepted by God, for the wilderness was strewn with their corpses… All these things that happened to them were symbolic, and were recorded as a warning for us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. If you think you are standing firm, take care, or you may fall.
