We can only “know” that God exists. Our limited human senses and reason evidence God’s existence through the sensible world and through our interior life. Any fact about God beyond God's mere existence, however, depends on God to reveal.
That, God does through the Divine Logos, the “Word” of God incarnate in the life of Jesus, which we know through the twin witness of Scripture and the teaching Tradition of the Church.
Today that Scripture communicates what reason alone can not about the Logos of God:
He was in the form of God; yet he… made himself nothing, assuming the form of a slave. Bearing the human likeness, sharing the human lot, he humbled himself… Therefore God raised him to the heights… that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow — in heaven, on earth, and in the depths…. – Phil. 2:6-10 (REB)
To what end? Some kind of divine narcissism? No.
To share that exaltation with us, to make us like him, to bring us where he is, where our own nature cannot ascend unaided.
[God] lifts the weak out of the dust and raises the poor from the rubbish heap
giving them a place among princes, among the princes of his people…. – Ps 113:7-8 (REB)
Raise us, Lord, above our impoverished nature.
