The Dragon’s Blade (Michael R. Miller)
The Dragon’s Blade est une trilogie de fantasy auto-éditée par l’auteur britannique Michael R. Miller, que j’ai eu l’occasion de découvrir sur l’excellente chaîne YouTube The Book Guy.
Je vais vous parler ici, dans l’ordre, des trois romans qui composent cette trilogie :
1. The Reborn King
Darnuir made terrible mistakes. Death is his redemption. His second chance is the world's last hope.
Dragons once soared in the skies, but that was before the Transformation, before they took human form. Now, demonic forces stand to obliterate them. When left mortally wounded, Darnuir, the Prince of Dragons, can only be saved through a dangerous rebirthing spell. He is left as a babe in human hands.
Twenty years later, Darnuir is of age to wield the Dragon's Blade. As the last member of his bloodline, he is the only one who can. He is plunged into a role he is not prepared for, to lead a people he does not know. Shadowy demons ravage his new home and the alliance between humans, dragons and fairies has fractured.
Time is short, for new threats and deadlier enemies are emerging...
Ce premier tome d'une trilogie de fantasy est sympathique, sans plus pour le moment. L'univers et l'intrigue sont très classiques, les personnages manquent un peu de profondeur, le récit est globalement plaisant mais j'attends beaucoup mieux du tome suivant.
Enfin, je dois dire que j'en ai un peu marre de ces héros et héroïnes qui finissent tous pas se révéler être issus d'une lignée royale. Alors quand l'auteur nous fait le coup trois fois dans le même roman, ça commence à faire vraiment beaucoup. D'une part, c'est tout de même un cliché particulièrement éculé dans la fantasy. D'autre part, idéologiquement, ça pue un peu.
2. Veiled Intentions
Rectar has always had his sights set on conquering the human lands. His demonic invasion of the west is gaining momentum – an unrelenting horde unhindered by food or sleep. Now, only the undermanned Splintering Isles lie between the demons and the human kingdom of Brevia. If the islands fall, the rest of Tenalp will soon follow.
The Three Races must work together if they are to survive, but they have another problem – Castallan. The traitorous wizard has raised a deadly rebellion and declared himself King of Humans. He believes himself safe in the bowels of his impenetrable Bastion fortress, but Darnuir, now King of Dragons, intends to break those walls at all costs.
To face these threats, all dragons, humans and fairies must truly unite; yet old prejudices may undermine Darnuir’s efforts once again. And as the true intentions of all are revealed, so too is a secret that may change the entire world.
Après un premier tome que j'avais trouvé divertissant mais très stéréotypé, j'ai trouvé celui-ci sensiblement meilleur. Le divertissement est toujours au rendez-vous, mais s'appuie cette fois sur des personnages mieux écrits, plus profonds, au service d'un récit qui gagne en richesse. Cela reste relativement classique, mais on sent que l'auteur a aiguisé sa plume au fur et à mesure de l'écriture de la trilogie. J'espère que cette tendance se poursuivra avec le troisième et dernier tome, que je vais commencer dans la foulée.
3. The Last Guardian
As winter wanes, the fragile bonds of the Three Races begin to break.
With Darnuir recovering from his addiction, and Blaine reclusive in the hallways of his Order, it falls to Lira to manage the mounting tension between the humans and zealous dragons before catastrophe strikes from within the city walls.
In Brevia, King Arkus unveils his new weapons to the Assembly of Lords, but is it a gift to his people or a threat? Cassandra fears it the latter and vows to curb her father’s new unchecked power that she herself helped to create.
And beneath the burned mountain of Kar’drun, Dukoona suffers at the hands of his Master. His one hope now lies in the crippled spectre Sonrid, who is forcing his broken body back to the mountain in order to play his part, or die, and be free from his pained existence.
Darnuir awakes weakened, and to an alliance on the brink. He must at last become the leader the dragons need but will he be too late to save his people, not just from Rectar, but from years of their own mistakes?
Le troisième et dernier roman de la trilogie commence sur un faux rythme, relativement lent. Les différents personnages semblent comme bloqués, s'interrogeant sur leurs prochains actions. Le rythme finit par s'emballer dans la seconde partie du roman, avec un joli final qui offre une belle conclusion à la trilogie.
Bilan de la trilogie
Globalement, cette trilogie présente quelques belles qualités, même si on sent que la plume de l'auteur était encore jeune et pouvait gagner en maturité. Je dois dire que je suis curieux de voir comment cette plume a évolué dans sa saga suivante, Songs of Chaos, que je lirai probablement quand elle sera complète.
