Moths Report Improved Mental Health with LED Lighting

A new study in the New England Journal of Entomology looked at moth happiness under a variety of porch lights. While most months were annoyed that all porch lights caused navigation errors, they were generally more satisfied with LED-based light sources rather than older incandescent lights. The moths generally preferred the bright white lights with a color temperature closer to the Sun. Colored lights causes depression and significant mood swings in a majority of moths. The study’s authors, Dr. George Nightwatch and Dr. Sheila Meila, noted that moths responding to the survey felt more invigorated and upbeat in brighter lights and less depressed about their lot in life. Recommendations from the study include switching to LED porch lights to reduce the need for moth therapy and antidepressants.
